A statement by the artist

jāt khāli: farsi translates as ‘your seat is empty’ ; it is addressed to someone who is missed, or is missing. Written from the artist’s personal fragmented family narratives, this video work is a meditation on life perspective and hardship through the emotional labour of separation and loss, in the context of exile.

Alexandra Sheherazade Salem (b. 1996) is an artist, poet and performer based in Geneva (CH). Writing and poetry are at the core of her practice, which extends to the realms of video, installation and performance. Her work focuses on narrative and memory, exploring the notions of the in-between, grief and preservation.
